Online students may borrow books and other print materials
from the library for the home campus as well as from any of the 56 libraries
in the Illinois Library
Computer Systems Organization (ILCSO). The online catalog for ILCSO
libraries is known as Illinet
Online.
In addition, each campus provides its students access to an extensive
and varied collection of databases, online journals, and reference
materials.
Methods for ordering and obtaining books and print materials and for
accessing online information resources vary from campus to campus.
Additional information
is provided below:
Chicago
The University Library
Web site provides links to UICCAT,
an online catalog of UIC's library holdings, and to a wealth
of online information resources. Many of the latter resources are
specially licensed and available only to UIC faculty, staff, and students.
To gain access, library patrons, including online students, are prompted
to enter their Network ID (a unique login assigned when you enroll in
your first course at UIC) and associated password.
Students enrolled in online classes at any of the University
of Illinois campuses have access to all UIC Library Resources. Depending
on your campus affiliation, UIC will ship books to your "home"
campus for pick up. At the present time, UIC does not mail or ship books
to alternative pickup sites.
It may be possible, within the state of Illinois, to make
arrangements to have books routinely shipped for pickup at another library
on a case-by-case basis, particularly if it is a library in the ILCSO
consortium. These arrangements are made with the cooperation of the other
library you are using.
UIC will ship copies of articles either in hard-copy or
electronically via Ariel to another University of Illinois site for pickup.
As with books, arrangements can be made for pickup at some other libraries
in the ILCSO consortium. The goal is for UIC to be able to supply these
electronically to students via e-mail or to a secure web-site, but this
is not yet possible.
Springfield
Online students enrolled at UIS can access electronic resources
and other services available through the Brookens
Library. The Brookens
Bridge, UIS's gateway to online information resources provides
links to numerous databases, including Illinet
Online, the online library catalog. In order to borrow materials
from any of the 56 libraries participating the the ILCSO
consortium, a 14-digit ID number is required. Off-campus students
have the option of receiving the 14-digit ID number via e-mail
or requesting
an I-card (without photo) with the number printed on it.
Online students may use interlibrary loan services through
the forms provided on the Library's web page. If you are unable to pick
up the materials at the Brookens Library, a limited number of articles
can be mailed to your home address upon request. Always check the Illinet
Online catalog to see if needed materials are available through online
request (or at nearby ILCSO consortium libraries) before submitting a
request for a book through interlibrary loan on the UIS Library web page.
At this time, all books requested through either the Illinet Online system
or through regular interlibrary loan are sent to the UIS Library and must
be picked up there.
Many online course instructors use Electronic
Course Reserves for supplemental course materials. Instructors using
this service will provide passwords and instructions for access.
Urbana-Champaign

The Academic
Outreach Library Web site contains documentation on how to use various
library services as well as links to the Illinet
Online library catalog, article databases, electronic journals, and
forms for requesting articles, books and dissertations.
Distance education students are either issued a library
card or an I-card, which also serves as a library card. Library cards
provide access to online resources that are not open to the general public,
including the checkout and renewal functions of the online catalog. Library
cards and copies of the Library Outreach Services brochure are mailed
to all new off-campus students at the beginning of each semester.
