MUS 518 A - Regional Studies in Musicology
Seminar devoted to intensive study in the music of specific peoples, states, or geographic regions from around the world. Course Information: 4 graduate hours. No professional credit. May be repeated to a maximum of 16 graduate hours. Prerequisite: MUS 528 A (for DMA or MM performance or composition students); or consent of instructor.
Meets Summer 2B. Topic: "JEWISH MUSIC IN A GLOBAL CONTEXT." This course surveys Jewish musical culture in multiple recent and present-day global contexts and examines musical attributes, musical meaning, and ritual practice. We will also explore relationships between musical sound and social identity among diverse Jewish music makers in the Americas, Europe, Asia, and Africa, considering matters such as diaspora, memory, and ecstatic experience.
