BTW 490 1U - Special Topics Prof Writing - #SocialJusticeActivism
Study of the forms, situations, and social practices that define writing in particular disciplines or professions. Each class will focus on a specific topic such as science writing, writing in the environmental movement, legal writing, writing in the social sciences, public policy in the popular media, and so on. Assignments will vary with the topic. Course Information: 3 undergraduate hours. 4 graduate hours. May be repeated to a maximum of 6 undergraduate hours or 8 graduate hours. Prerequisite: Junior standing.
BTW 490: Hashtag Writing for Social Justice From #MeToo to #BlackLivesMatter, social justice movements in the 21st century are primarily organized and networked through Twitter and other digital networks. This class draws upon theories and research from digital rhetoric and cultural studies to examine social justice activism facilitated through social media. Throughout the semester, students will read research and analyze hashtag movements as well as develop their own online writing skills. For the final project, students will apply the course material to their interests, areas of expertise, and/or professional field. Examples include designing a social media campaign for a business; crafting a social justice unit plan for a classroom setting; or proposing an activist movement for a community organization. #SocialJusticeActivism
