Advanced topics course in Creative Writing. Students study selected topic through a workshop model, pursuing advanced development in one or more approaches to writing in a specialized field or genre. Course Information: 3 undergraduate hours. 4 graduate hours. May be repeated, if topics vary. Prerequisite: Junior standing required.

Creative Cartographies: Place in Poetry and Creative Nonfiction - -A place belongs forever,- Joan Didion says, -to whoever claims it hardest, remembers it most obsessively, wrenches it from itself, shapes it, renders it, loves it so radically that he remakes it in his image.- Didion is writing about Honolulu in the 1970s, but her statement applies equally to those places integral to our own lives, to hometowns, campuses, cultural and geographic landmarks, trade routes, planets, airports, vacation destinations, and-because cyberspace is always with us-Zoom, AIM, and Instagram. In this workshop, we will explore how to write meaningfully about the ways in which place, capaciously defined, informs both our private and public lives. Which places are most important to us, we will ask, and why- How do we account for the deep mystery in what Marcel Proust calls -place names--Marrakesh, Palm Springs, Ibiza, Ithaca- How does place transform us- And how, in equally profoun
