Variety of newly developed and advanced topics courses within the fields of Organization & Representation, intended to augment the existing Information Sciences curricula. Course Information: 2 to 4 graduate hours. No professional credit. Approved for Letter and S/U grading. May be repeated in the same or separate semesters to a maximum of 16 hours, if topics vary.
Special Instructions:
Prerequisites: IS 505-Information Organization and Access (formerly IS 501) or IS 515-Information Modeling (formerly IS 561). Concurrent enrollment in one of the listed prerequisite courses above is required if none of the prerequisite options has already been completed. This course examines 3 practical applications of linked open data (LOD) and introduces students to tools and methods used to create such applications. Building on Semantic Web information models and the Resource Description Framework (RDF), as well as (more fundamentally) on related theories and models of information and bibliographic metadata (explored in more depth in related courses / prerequisites -- see attached), this course gives students hands-on experience with: 2 serializations of RDF (Turtle and JSON-LD); triple stores and SPARQL; and JavaScript-based applications that leverage LOD to provide context, enhance interoperability, and facilitate knowledge discovery and organization.
