Databases are important because they play a critical role in today's business environment. Almost all modern organizations use database technologies to store and manage data in every functional area of business including its operations, finance, accounting, and marketing. By understanding data modeling and being able to query databases, you possess one of the most marketable skills to help a business better manage their data and discover new opportunities through better analytics.
