The U of I Online office provides basic advising and referral services
for prospective students who have not yet decided on a specific
program of study. The U of I Online academic counseling staff can
help you determine which of our many online courses and programs
match up best with your educational background and career goals.
To contact our staff, please complete our online
inquiry form or send an e-mail request to uiol-info@uillinois.edu.
Chicago
Degree-seeking graduate students must have an academic
advisor in their graduate program area. The academic advisor assists
in planning a program of graduate study that fits your needs and
satisfies the graduate program and Graduate College requirements.
New students should consult the director of graduate studies to
discuss the selection of an academic advisor. All PhD candidates
must have a dissertation advisor who is a member of the Graduate
College. Both masters and doctoral students must have a major advisor
(academic or research) who is a member of the Graduate College faculty.
Non-degree students do not have a formal advisor.
However, such students must receive approval from an authorized
person in the program(s) offering the course(s) prior to attempting
registration.
For more information, contact the coordinator of the
program(s) in which you are interested. Contact information is provided
on the corresponding program page(s) in the U
of I Online catalog.
Springfield
At the University of Illinois at Springfield, academic advising
is handled within academic departments. For advising services related
to online programs at UIS, contact the coordinator of the program(s)
in which you are interested. Contact information is provided on
the corresponding program page(s) in the University
of Illinois Online catalog. For academic advising in other curricular
areas, contact the department by phone or e-mail. A list
of academic departments providing links to departmental home
pages is available on the UIS Web site.
Urbana-Champaign
When graduate students are accepted into a degree program,
they are assigned to an advisor who will be responsible for helping
them plan their academic program. After the students settle on an
area of research, they are expected to select a faculty member with
compatible research interests to supervise their thesis. An adviser
signature is required on all petition forms submitted by students.
All graduate students should read the Handbook
for Graduate Students and Advisors. Undergraduate students should
read the information available on the Undergraduate
Academic Advising Web site.
