Description:
The English program at the University of Illinois at Springfield offers students a wide range of courses, a highly qualified faculty, and class sizes that facilitate individual exchange and attention. Students may choose courses that can help them prepare for teaching careers, for jobs as editors and writers, or for graduate work. The program offers a wide range of traditional British, American, and World literature courses, courses focusing on a variety of topics and themes within literature, and writing courses.

The online English program allows students to actively participate in dynamic, diverse, and interactive online learning communities and to complete their degrees in their own time and at their own pace within the traditional semester via the Internet. The web-based format enables them to complete coursework using the latest networked information technologies for increased access to educational resources, advisers, and materials.

Application Requirements
Currently, formal application to both the University and the program is required for admission. Students should submit the following materials to the UIS Admissions Office (One University Plaza, Springfield, IL, 62703):
1. UIS application (see www.uis.edu/admissions) and
2. $50 ($60 for international students) application fee. (see www.uis.edu/registration/tuition/index.html)


Enrollment Capacity
The online English Program will accept 20 new students each fall semester. For best consideration, students should submit application materials as early as possible prior to the application deadline. All application materials must be received by the deadline in order for the applicant to be considered. Contact the Online Program Coordinator for specific information.

Program Entrance Requirements
To apply to enter the online English (ENG) program, students must have:

  • A cumulative grade point average of 3.00 or higher on a 4.00 scale from an accredited college or university

  • Completed two semesters of English composition (6-8 hours) with a grade of "C" or better and two literature courses

  • Access to the Internet and possess required computer skills to study online

  • Submitted a Statement of Intent, not to exceed 750 words, which will serve as a writing sample and should discuss academic and work experiences, rationale for becoming an online major in English, plans for progress toward and completion of degree, and pertinent life experiences.

  • Corequisite: Degree requirements include the following.
    ENG 301 Introduction to the Discipline - 4 hours
    ENG 311 Literary Study and Research - 4 hours
    ENG 489 Capstone to Literary Study - 4 hours
    At least one course in British literature - 4 hours
    At least one course in American literature - 4 hours
    At least one ENG course ending in 50-89 (writing and other courses) - 4 hours
    ENG electives - 12 hours
    UIS Requirements - 13 hours
    General electives (8 hours must be in areas distinctly outside of English) - 12 hours
