Description:
The basic motivation for enrollment in a public health informatics program relates to the fundamental role that information gathering, analysis and dissemination now play in health care delivery and public health. The key role of health surveillance and analysis systems in public health investigations requires that public health professionals have not only an understanding of core public health principles but also the design and use of information systems. Business management and information management degrees alone do not provide the professional with knowledge of the principles and analytical tools of public health that are needed to direct the development of public health related information systems.

Graduates of the program will acquire the following skills and knowledge after completion of the program:



* A knowledge of the basic principles of public health

* The ability to specify the requirements for the development or adaptation of public health related information systems

* Knowledge of health data definitions and standards, as well as privacy and confidentiality issues

* Ability to plan, specify and manage the implementation of public health information systems projects

* Knowledge of the existence, structure, and uses of public health and health databases and networks

* An understanding of the basic functions and operations of information technologies that have significant application in public health practice such as geographic information systems, web-based information dissemination and data mining

* Skill in information technology planning and procurement related to public health information systems

Admission Requirement(s): A baccalaureate degree from an accredited school is required.


The admission process is highly competitive. Although exceptions may be made, admitted students typically have a combined undergraduate/graduate grade point average of 4.00 (A = 5.0) and a combined Graduate Record Examination score of at least 1,000 (verbal plus quantitative). Applicants educated primarily outside of a country where English is the principal language must submit TOEFL scores.

All MPH applicants must submit GRE scores, EXCEPT:
MPH applicants with a graduate or professional degree at the doctoral level, e.g., PhD, ScD, MD, DDS, DO, DVM, JD, from an accredited U.S. or Canadian school.
MPH applicants with the above-stated degrees from foreign schools whose applications are sponsored by an accepted referral service, such as AFGRAD, AMIDEAST.
Physicians who are licensed to practice in the United States.


NOTE: The USMLE and ECFMG will not be considered in lieu of the GRE.


In exceptional cases, the Division director may waive the GRE requirement. If you wish to be considered for such a waiver, state in a cover letter the basis for your request. You must submit your application in sufficient time to take the GRE and have the scores sent to the School by the application deadline, in the event that your request is denied.
