Description:
The liberal studies program provides students the opportunity to explore educational goals in a way that may not be possible through traditional academic programs. The program integrates eight areas of learning with a variety of instructional methods to form a well-rounded and individual learning experience which assists students in deepening their understandings of the values, meaning, concerns, choices, and commitments that are basic to the quality of life.

Liberal studies learners design individualized degree plans in the entry course LIS 301 Self-directed Learning based upon their particular interests, goals, and needs, although these plans must be broad enough to meet the program's interdisciplinary goal. Learners may also incorporate a thematic focus within their degree plan, for example, cultural studies. Students are not limited to a specific list of themes and can incorporate ideas based upon their personal goals.

Liberal studies learners have a good chance for success if they are self-directed, able to plan ahead and meet deadlines, able to work independently, and if they have a clear understanding of what they are trying to accomplish in an academic setting. In addition, liberal studies learners should be prepared to take junior-level courses when they enter the program.

The program can be completed completely online, although students are encouraged to take campus-based courses if they wish. Online students should be comfortable using networked information technologies, navigating the Internet, using e-mail, and learning from a distance.
