Dr. Merrily Stover is the Director of the Extended Learning Institute, the distance learning branch of Northern Virginia Community College, the nation's third largest community college. Under Dr. Stover's direction over 4200 students are enrolled in ELI classes each term, with one-third in Web-based classes using ALNs. Dr. Stover came to NVCC from the University of Maryland University College where she served as Director of Behavioral and Social Sciences for the Open Learning Program. Her introduction to distance learning came from the Open University in London, England, where she taught in 1992. Dr. Stover has also taught at Birkbeck College, University of London, Monterey Institute of International Studies, University of Hawaii, Kapiolani Community College, and Hawaii Pacific College. Dr. Stover received her Ph.D. in Anthropology from the University of Hawaii where she did her dissertation field work in Samoa.
