Registration Procedures

Each University of Illinois campus uses a different course registration system. For most online courses offered by the Urbana campus, for example, it is possible to register for most online courses via a simple Web-based form, while both Springfield and Chicago use automated telephone-based systems. Additional general information for each campus is available below.

Chicago
Credit Courses
Once a student has been admitted to UIC, students must register via the Web for Student system (Banner). Students should consult with their academic advisor for questions regarding in which courses to register.

Non-Credit Courses
Typically, the admission and registration process for non-credit programs is one process. Students are encouraged to contact the program coordinator listed in the UI Online catalog or UIC Online to get details regarding registration. (Note: Non-credit courses and programs are *not* included in the campus admission & registration system Web for Student.)

Springfield
Once a student has been admitted to UIS, on-campus and online students must register via the online Web Self-Service system. Additional information about course enrollments at UIS is available on the Office of Records and Registration website.

Urbana-Champaign
The Division of Academic Outreach manages enrollment for most online credit and noncredit courses offered by the Urbana campus. Students can register for credit courses via an online registration form. Enrollment in online Guided Individual Study courses (these courses have an "x" preceding the course number; e.g., ENGL x102c) is handled via form, which can be completed online and then printed from the Guided Individual Study Web site. Links to both forms as well as additional information is available on Academic Outreach's Credit Course Enrollment Procedures page.

Important Note: All Campuses
In many cases, before you can register for an online course for undergraduate or graduate credit, you must first be admitted to the campus offering the course. If you have not yet been admitted to a campus or program, visit the Admissions section of our Web site to learn more about admissions procedures and options.

Intercampus and Concurrent Registration

Intercampus Enrollment for U of I Students
It is possible for students from one University of Illinois campus to enroll at another U of I campus for up to two terms without having to transfer. This process, called intercampus enrollment, involves completing a downloadable form, obtaining the signature of the home college Dean, and submitting the form to the Registrar's Office on the home campus at least eight weeks prior to the first day of class.

The intent of the Intercampus Enrollment program is to allow students at one campus of the University the opportunity to take advantage of experiences unique to another campus. The program is for students who, for one reason or another, have decided not to enroll on their home campus in a given semester, and instead wish to take classes at another U of I campus. Intercampus enrollment is not designed to replace concurrent enrollment or transfer, nor is it available to graduate or international students.

If you are a current U of I student and wish to enroll at another university campus, you must check with your home college to be sure that the courses will count towards your degree before enrolling. Pre-approval by your college is mandatory.

Concurrent Enrollment for U of I Students
The process for enrolling in courses offered by two different U of I campuses (your home campus and another campus) during the same semester is called concurrent enrollment. Concurrent enrollment procedures have not yet been fully standardized. If you would like to take an online course from another U of I campus while enrolled in courses in your home campus, begin by speaking with your Program Coordinator or Academic Dean, as well as the Registrar's Office on your home campus. Decisions about how the process will work and whether it is possible are made on a case-by-case basis, so it is important that you speak at length with an authorized representative from your home department and the Registrar's Office before taking any further action.
