Application and admission
procedures vary by campus and program.
If you plan to apply for admission
to a complete degree or certificate
program, contact the program coordinator
listed in our online
catalog to find out the specific
application requirements for that
program. General information about
admissions to the three University
of Illinois campuses is available
below.
Chicago
Credit Courses and Programs
Most adademic credit courses and programs at UIC require students to apply through the Office of Admissions either online or on paper. However, some programs have specific application requirements. See below for more detail.
Undergraduate Study
UIC does not have any fully online courses at the undergraduate level at this time.
Graduate Study
Students must be admitted to the Graduate College to enroll in graduate courses and programs offered at UIC. However, there is an option to enter the Graduate College as a non-degree student. The non-degree option is designed for students who do not wish to pursue a degree but want to take courses for professional reasons or personal enrichment, as well as for individuals who have been out of school for several years or in a different field of study. General information about graduate admissions is available at the Graduate College Admissions Web site. Since individual programs of study may have additional specific admissions requirements, be sure to contact the coordinator of the program(s) you are interested in before submitting your application. Contact information for program coordinators is provided with each program entry
in our online catalog or you can visit UIC Online.
There are a few online graduate programs that require students to apply directly with the department and not
through the Graduate College. These programs are: Master of Engineering, Certificate in Engineering Law &
Management, Certificate in Electromagnetics, Certificate in Wireless Communication, Master of Public Health
in Public Health Informatics, Certificate in Public Health Informatics, and Certificate in Environmental Health
Informatics.
Non-Credit Programs
A formal application and admission process is not required for non-credit programs. Please visit the program's
Web site or contact the program coordinator listed on UIC Online to get more information about registration
procedures.
For general information or assistance with online programs at UIC, send requests via e-mail to online@uic.edu.
Springfield
Before enrolling in an online course, all students (even those not
seeking a degree) must complete an application form and submit it
to the Office of Admissions.
Undergraduate
Study
Applicants with 30 or more semester hours and a cumulative GPA of
2.00 or higher on a 4.00 scale from any regionally accredited institution
may be admitted as a UIS undergraduate. If you fall into this category,
you are encouraged to have completed 39 hours of required general
education courses prior to admission, but you must have completed
three semester hours of English composition as a minimum requirement.
If you have questions, please review the UIS General
Education Requirements. Graduates of regionally accredited community
colleges with an Associate of Arts or Science are considered to
have met all general education requirements. All requests for exceptions
should be directed to the Office of Admissions.
Graduate Study
Students must complete an application to UIS and have official transcripts
submitted to the Office
of Admissions in order to begin a graduate degree program. Full
admission to graduate studies may be granted to students who have
earned a baccalaureate degree with a minimum undergraduate grade-point
average of 2.50 on a 4.00 scale and who have met all specific program
requirements and prerequisite courses. Some programs may require
higher grade-point averages. Conditional admissions may be granted
to students who do not meet GPA requirements at the department's
approval. Visit the Web site of your intended program for the most
complete information.
Non-Degree
Status
Both undergraduate and graduate students may take one or two courses
each term as a non-degree student. Undergraduate non-degree students
must clarify their status before exceeding 16 hours, and graduate
students must do so before exceeding 12 hours.
Application
forms, detailed admission
requirements, and other useful information is available from
the Admissions Web site.
If you cannot find what you need on the Web, contact the Office
of Admissions at 217-206-6626, toll free at 800-252-8533, or via
their electronic form.
Urbana
At Urbana, formal application and admission are required of degree-seeking
students only. Additional details are given below.
Undergraduate Courses
Online courses at the 100, 200, and 300-level are open to undergraduate
applicants who meet the course prerequisites. Formal application
and admission are not required to enroll as a non-degree student
in online undergraduate courses. Courses at the 400-level are open
only to students with a bachelor's degree. Undergraduate students
who plan to apply one or more online courses toward a baccalaureate
degree at any institution should first consult with their academic
advisor.
Graduate Courses
and Programs
A formal application and admissions process is not required in order
to enroll in just one or two courses. A maximum of three units of
credit (roughly equivalent to three courses) earned prior to admission
as a degree candidate may be applied toward a graduate degree program
at Urbana. Thus, if you are considering a full degree program in
the future, it is advisable to apply for admission to the Graduate
College and your desired program of study as early as possible to
insure that credits earned in online course work are applicable
to the program.
Off-campus students who wish to pursue a graduate
degree program from UIUC must apply and be accepted for admission
as a degree candidate in the Graduate College. Before applying for
admission, contact the department to which you seek admission. Many
graduate programs require additional information along with the
basic application. Departmental contact information is provided
in each program's entry in our online
catalog.
Online
and downloadable
application forms as well as information about applying for graduate
admission are available from the Graduate
College Web site. Additional information, policies, and procedures
of relevance to off-campus students are available in the Programs section of the Division
of Academic Outreach Web site.
If you are uncertain about whether you need to be
admitted before enrolling in an online course, contact a registration
secretary in the Division
of Academic Outreach at (217) 333-3060 or toll-free at (800)
252-1360, extension 3-3060
