School of Public Health to offer two new online certificate programs this spring
The School of Public Health, Division of Community Health Sciences, is now accepting applications for two new online campus certificate programs: Basic Community Public Health Practice and Advanced Community Public Health Practice. Both graduate-level certificates are targeted to individuals who are currently working in community, public health or other related fields and whose current or future position requires either basic or advanced skills and competency in identifying and addressing community health needs and priorities. Epidemiology, public health practice and the social and behavioral aspects of health and community health assessment are the focus of the Basic program, while the Advanced Community Public Health Practice program focuses on public health program planning and evaluation, community research methods, health promotion and education and policy development and advocacy. UIS wins major national award for online teaching, learning
UIS has won a major national award for Excellence in Institution-Wide Online Teaching & Learning Programming from the Sloan Consortium (Sloan-C). UIS' exceptional leadership in advancing online education was cited in the announcement from Boston Monday. "For UIS to receive a national award of this magnitude for excellence among the thousands of colleges and universities with online programs across the country is most extraordinary," said UIS Chancellor Richard Ringeisen. Harshavardhan D. Bapat, assistant professor of Chemistry at the University of Illinois at Springfield, made a presentation titled "Podcasting and general chemistry: What is my chemistry professor doing in my iPod?" at the national meeting of the American Chemical Society held in Chicago in March. Bapat examined the use of podcasting to deliver course content to students anywhere the Internet can reach. He also discussed the process of developing and delivering a podcast, as well as measuring the effectiveness of podcasting as a pedagogical tool. More...

UIC to Offer Online Social Work Courses
The field of social work is pushing for greater flexibility and access in the delivery of graduate and professional continuing education. Through UIC Online, the Jane Addams College of Social Work will offer its first online course, "Kinship Care", in fall 2007. The study of kinship care meets a growing need among human service professionals, providing knowledge about an increasingly common family form. The course presents a comprehensive overview of kinship care and is easily accessible to both graduate students for graduate credit and to human service professionals for professional enrichment. With the launch of a landmark partnership between Illinois public universities, the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity, the University of Illinois at Chicago's School of Public Health and the UIC College of Business Administration, the Emergency Management and Continuity Planning Online Certificate Program (EMCP) was created as part of the new homeland security field of study program in higher education for the state of Illinois. UIS Programs Reaching Students Globally
A total of 953 students are enrolled in the university's 15 online degree programs this spring, an increase of 165, or 20.9%, over last spring. Almost half (46.3%) of the total number of students enrolled at UIS are taking at least one course online, and one of every four (25.9%) are taking online courses exclusively. Online students have mailing addresses in 46 states, two Canadian provinces, and a total of nine foreign countries in all, according to Ray Schroeder, Director of UIS' Office of Technology-Enhanced Learning. "We are particularly excited about the growth of our online degree majors from around the U.S. and several foreign countries. These students bring a rich diversity to online classes in which both distant and area students are enrolled," Schroeder said. More...

The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign was named the #6 most wired college by PC Magazine, in their January 2007 edition. UIS Offers New Master's Degree in Legal Studies
Beginning in August of 2007, students wishing to earn a Legal Studies Master’s degree will have the option of obtaining their degree online. The Legal Studies on-line master’s degree program combines two online methods of delivery. Required or core courses are taught synchronously, in real-time, using computer conferencing software. Elective courses are taught asynchronously at each student’s own convenience, using collaborative tools and discussion boards. You must submit separate applications both to the University of Illinois at Springfield Admissions Office and the Legal Studies Department. You will be assigned an advisor after you are admitted. To graduate with a Legal Studies Master’s degree, students must complete a minimum of 36 hours of required and advisor approved elective legal studies and general elective courses. More...

UIS Office of Technology-Enhanced Learning to host national workshop
The Office of Technology-Enhanced Learning at UIS will host a national workshop on "Online Learning in an Emergency: Delivering the Curriculum When the Campus is Closed," September 20 to 22 in New Orleans. The conference is funded by a $45,000 grant from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. OTEL Director Ray Schroeder will serve as chair. Schroeder had originally submitted a proposal for this conference early in the summer of 2005, but when Hurricane Katrina struck, Schroeder and Burks Oakley, U of I Associate Vice President of Academic Affairs, conceived and spearheaded a major national initiative in which the Sloan Foundation contributed more than $1 million to provide free online college courses for displaced students. As a world-class university, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign attracts students from around the globe. Free Online College Courses for Students Displaced by Hurricane Katrina
(Atlanta, GA) The Sloan Consortium, an international association of colleges and universities committed to quality online education, is offering students displaced by Hurricane Katrina an opportunity to continue their education at no cost. In collaboration with the Southern Regional Education Board and with a $1.1 million grant from the Alfred P.
