The new technologies developed for online learning have opened the door to greater collaborations in teaching and learning among institutions of higher education. Funded by a grant from the Illinois Board of Higher Education, the University of Illinois at Springfield is collaborating with Chicago State University in the offering of online classes and shared online modules for campus classes. Beginning last semester with the EDL 547 Technology in the Curriculum, adjunct instructor Shari McCurdy joined her class with a class at CSU. Students from the two institutions worked together on project using the Elluminate web conferencing software. Other collaborations are underway, including one that merges students enrolled in Professor Emeritus Ray Schroeder's PAC 442 Internet and American Life at UIS with a special topics class in Web and Society at UIS. This semester-long collaboration includes sharing of resources through both synchronous and asynchronous modes. One goal of the UIS - CSU collaboration is to bring diverse perspectives into classes offered by the two institutions. Collaborations with other institutions across the U.S. are in the planning stages. Ray Schroeder and Shari McCurdy will be co-presenting their findings at the Midwest EDUCAUSE conference and the International Conference on College Teaching and Learning in March.
