Specialist in Blood Bank Technology Program Launched

The Department of Biomedical and Health Information Sciences in the College of Applied Health Sciences at the University of Illinois at Chicago is pleased to announce that the Specialist in Blood Bank Technology (SBB) Certificate Program will be accepting students into their newly developed, fully online curriculum. The SBB Program has been created to meet the needs of experienced, post-baccalaureate, clinical laboratory science professionals seeking advanced understanding of blood bank technology and its related disciplines. The program fulfills requirements for eligibility to take the SBB certification examination given by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) Board of Registry. Students successfully completing this program will be prepared to assume positions in supervision/management, clinical research, or teaching in a hospital, blood center, university, government, or health care related industry.

Clinical laboratory scientists and other health professionals interested in pursuing instruction in this specialty are distributed over a large geographical area: locally, nationally, and internationally. The UIC SBB Program has been transitioned to an online format requiring no face-to-face classes, thereby optimizing “anytime, anyplace” learning.. The SBB program introduces flexibility to quality teaching and instruction by the use of guest experts who are available to share their skills and experience through online presentations and interactive discussions. The online format lends itself to the development of advanced thinking skills required for problem-solving and used by those in leadership positions, similar to occupations assumed by students who have completed the SBB program. A dialogue is established between students and instructors through the use of case studies and discussion questions. Online group interaction and participation allows for development of knowledge acquisition, critical evaluation and knowledge validation--all essential in the development of higher-order thinking skills.
