New Online Bachelor Degree Completion Programs

U of I Online is announcing several new online degree, certificate and professional development programs currently accepting applications and enrollments for the Fall 2003 semester. Among the most anticipated are two undergraduate degree completion programs offered by the Springfield campus (UIS)- History and Computer Science. The new programs are being offered by the College of Liberal Arts and Science Online Programs at UIS. Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Bill Bloemer noted, “We're very excited to offer these highly successful programs via the Internet. The demand for these new programs has been overwhelming. We simply cannot create enough virtual seats to handle the potential enrollment. ”

The History program at the UIS offers students a wide range of courses, a highly qualified faculty and class sizes that permit faculty to give students individual attention. By emphasizing the link between the past and the contemporary world, the history program encourages students to compare elements of their own culture with those of other cultures form other time periods. Students of history gain a sense of what is unique in, as well as generally characteristic of, individuals, groups, and national cultures in the present as well as the past.

The Computer Science program is designed to provide students with a strong foundation in computer science and related disciplines. The curriculum encourages the development of cutting-edge techniques and practices, yet ensures that they learn the requisite core skills and theoretical foundations that have historically driven computer science. Graduates of the traditional Bachelor of Science program have been successful in earning advanced degrees and in pursuing careers in research and application-oriented positions in business, industry, government, and education.

With the two new programs, UIS now has a total of four bachelor degree completion programs; the programs already in existence are English and Liberal Studies. UIS also offers four undergraduate program minors online; minors offered include Computer Science, English, History, and Philosophy.
